Encaustic medium is made out of (filtered) beeswax and natural dammar resin, melted and mixed together. Adding suitable pigments to it creates encaustic paint. It is usually used melted (hot), in its liquid form. After cooling it solidifies and hardens, the resin adding to its strength and shine. Several layers can be added, that are fixed by heat after application. It can be combined with any kind of material or substance that doesn’t contain water (wood, paper, oils, metallic foils, textiles etc.). It can adhere on top of watercolor paintings after drying. It’s suitable for any surface that is at least slightly porous, like wood, stone, canvas, paper; it does not stick to glass or plastic surfaces (including acrylic paintings) due to their smooth texture. It can also be collaged or sculpted.

Stored in proper conditions, encaustic is extremely archivable. It is actually an ancient painting technique, the term originating from Ancient Greece. It was widely used worldwide, as it can be found in ancient Europe (Ancient Greece, Roman Empire – including Pompei) and Asia (Egypt or Philippines). In Romania we can find encaustic murals also in old churches.

Being made out of natural ingredients makes it an indoor artwork. Storing (or transporting) it in conditions a plant would survive in is strongly recommended: avoid extreme temperatures or proximity to heat sources (radiators, vents, air conditioners; direct or filtered by windows sunlight) and do not leave it in a hot car.
In case of contact with colder temperatures, especially in the first year (as the wax is curing) the surface might develop a blur (fogginess), which can be easily removed by gently wiping it with a soft lint-free synthetic cloth (nylon stockings). This is recommended also for dusting. Avoid applying strong pressure.
Before covering it with anything (bubble wrap), use a layer of parchment (baking) paper. This is to avoid the creation of additional texture.

As with most pieces of art, encaustic paintings are considered fragile, but not extremely brittle. The dammar resin adds strength to the beeswax, and the mixed media underpainting adds to the canvas’s one (paintings can be created on canvas or wood boards). As long as they are handled with care and not exposed to strong pressure, sharp objects, extreme temperatures or gravity, they should at least maintain their appearance, or even improve it (time helps the encaustic layers to cure, making it look even more transparent and shiny, the surface actually becoming dust repellant).

Any personalized painting involves also the contribution of the customer. The general image, design and aesthetic are decided by me, as the creative artist. The choice of the color scheme, theme and other details are open to discussion. The customer should be open to direct communication (via telephone, email or written text messages), so that somewhat of an understanding of the needs and personal tastes would be possible.
In the case of a photo collage, the person who orders the artwork has to provide a printable high-quality photograph.
A non-refundable downpayment of 50% of the final price is required, before starting the project. Progress is submitted for feedback and finalizing. The process can require (depending on the magnitude) up to one month (the time needed for the curing of every layer must be taken into consideration).
The second 50% of the price is paid after the final confirmation of the finished painting, before having it delivered.
